Indians once camped and, later, farmers planted cotton, along the horseshoe bend of the Chattahoochee River, where golfers at the Horseshoe Bend Golf Club in North Fulton play now.

For many years the area was the site of the Atlanta Steeplechase, but in the mid-1970s Lowell Womack began developing the 1,100-acre golf-club community known as Horseshoe Bend on the Chattahoochee.

The first residents moved into the neighborhood in 1975. Womack sold to the Ford Foundation, which, in turn, sold to Mobil Land Development in the late 1970s. Tattersall Companies bought the land and country club in 1985.

Almost all of the 1,200-home community has been completed, but there are still new homes available in the neighborhoods of the Glens and River Highlands. With older homes appreciating and new ones being built, the neighborhood offers a range of styles from lakeside contemporaries to custom estate homes on large lots, priced from $200,000 to $1 million.
